I bought a 2011 Trek Cobia. I'm hoping to get my ass back into shape again with biking, backpacking, and playing hockey in the winter. Turning 25 is seriously the best thing that's happened to me. I finally have money to do the things I want to. I can throw the bike into the back of my Subaru wagon or throw it on the hitch rack. I currently drive 26 miles to work each way and I'm hoping to start parking and then riding into work the rest of the way. We have lockers and showers, and my 2 bosses are avid bikers and said they'd be fine with me doing so as long as I clean up. I'm hoping to start riding the last 5 miles (and back to my car after work) and eventually work up to 10-15 miles.

Nice. I strongly recommend getting a set of low rolling resistance tires. $40 will get you a lot of speed.

I'm definitely going to get a set of street tires just for commuting, and then keep the OEM tires for offroading

2 wheels are always good
I just realized every 2-wheeled thing I own is orange... I may have a problem

Doing 5 miles should be easy peasy on a bike especially with that tall of a third gear. Although a couple of tips.
1) Never have the back gear in "1" and the front gear in "1". The same goes for the top gear in both. This stresses you chain and will also hurt your front chainring and cassette.
2) ALWAYS wear a helmet, no one goes out planning to get into a crash.
3) Get some cycling shoes and clipless pedals! It might cost you about $150 but it'll be the best $150 that you will ever spend on your bike.
4) Get some bar ends like those pictured below. Trust me, your back will thank you.
5) If you're going to be riding almost exclusively on-road ditch the off-road tires and invest in some road slicks.
6) When going over an extension cord make sure that you go over it with the front of your wheel and not your side if you don't want to crash.
I think that's about it! It's an awesome bike and I hope you enjoy it!

I think I ruined the cassette on my mountain bike I had as a teen because everytime I try to pedal, the chain slips.
I always do wear a helmet, whether racing, biking, motorcycling, or playing a game of pickup hockey.
I was planning on getting some cycling shoes and clipless pedals- already thinking the Crank Brothers Mallet pedals might be good just because I can wear street shoes and still pedal
I used to have bar end links on another mountain bike I had as a teen and I'd like to put another set on this Cobia. They were incredible
I'll be doing most of my miles on-road, but I still do want to keep the tires that come with the bike for some singletracking with a buddy of mine
Extension cords? I assume you had a bad experience with one?
Thanks! Hopefully I'll get some pictures of the wagon loaded up with the bike

this is a good idea. Consider getting a separate wheelset for this- easy swaps. I did this with a commuter bike years ago. The most road bike like tires that will fit on 26" mountain bike rims is 650b x 23c. 650b is the diameter, and 23c is the width.

Oh yeah, after you go offroading, clean your chain. Very important you do so or the dirt will destroy everything. And don't get White lightning degreaser...get some biodegradable stuff. Clips are very useful for better bike handling and a greater use of power in one stroke.

Yeah I guess you could say me and extension cords don't get along too well. Probobly gave Holo PTSD. The crash bent one of her wheels so she's currently borrowing a wheel from my mom's Hardrock until I get it fixed.
On a side note I'm using Shimano SPDs. Also Shimano makes a pedal like that too for only abou $30. I'll link you to it when I get to my computer.

This is a 29er and I've been out of the bike game for a while so I'll have to do some research on what will fit and what won't

Holy shit man, that looks like a nasty spill!
My buddy also recommended SPDs. What about any of the Crank Brothers products?
